About the film

National Anthem is the story of a “one-hit-wonder” pop star, who’s fallen on hard times. Clint has lost his house, his wife, and his career, and the only thing he’s managed to save is the bottle. But one day, he receives an email from another planet, which asks him to come there and write their national anthem. This planet worships Clint, and little does he know when he accepts the invitation, that he will once again be famous! 

Join Clint on his adventure across the strange planet of Rena Lara, where he meets her weird citizens and learns all about her bizarre culture. Will he have what it takes to write a new song that will move a nation?

The Details

National Anthem is created entirely by Will Goss, who wrote, directed, edited, soundtracked, and played all the parts in the film. He also drew, painted, cut, and composited all the images which form the background of this strange world. NA is an experimental film, somewhere in-between an animation and a live-action. 

The journey is not only about Clint and his quest to write the national anthem, but it is also a journey of style. Each scene of the film is created with a different artistic medium: watercolor, oil paint, paper cut-outs, sewing, video art, glitter paper, vintage computer paint programs, colored pencils, and markers. Begun in the dark, quarantined days of the pandemic, National Anthem has now emerged into the altered world of 2022.
