Dear Light House Filmmaker Families,

We hope you and your families are figuring your ways through quarantine. If there is a bright side to COVID, it may be in our collective ability to make substantial changes to our lives quickly for the benefit of all.  Light House continues to follow the guidelines set by the governor’s office as well as the CDC. As always, our first priority is to take care of our students, team and families.

We know like us, you would like to plan your summer. For this reason and to provide some clarity where there is mostly grey, we have decided to move our Summer Film Academy online.

This Spring, Light House teachers taught 20 workshops and classes online. The response has been fantastic, and we are confident we can bring quality instruction to our online Summer Film Academy. While we are disappointed that we cannot see you in person this summer, we are excited about the creative ways in which we will bring filmmaking to your house.

1. Equipment _ One of the unique aspects of taking a workshop at Light House is the opportunity to use film equipment. As our staff discussed how to make this summer special, we decided to invest in substantially more equipment in order to provide filmmaking equipment to each student participating in a program! We have some very effective and fun ways to make the collaboration and instruction work.

How will the equipment be made available? For a given workshop, each student will “check out” a Filmmaking Kit, including a camera and other basic filmmaking equipment needed to create a film (cameras will vary depending on age and workshop level). Students will be able to use this equipment throughout the week under the instruction of our Teaching Artists. At the end of the week, students will return the Filmmaking Kit so that we can clean it to pass off to the next students the following week. In this way, you’ll be bringing Light House Studio to your own home!

2. Individual Instruction _ Storytelling is our passion. In order to create the best storytelling environment, there must be opportunity for each individual voice to be heard. At Light House, we create this by maintaining a small Teaching Artist-to-student ratio. We will continue to keep this ratio to 5 to 1 (or less). Additionally, we will be offering individual sessions throughout the week.

3. Expert Voices _ Unprecedented times sometimes lead to unprecedented opportunities. We have some friends in the film industry who now have more availability in their usually packed schedules. For our advanced courses, students will have access to established film professionals in addition to our skilled Teaching Artist staff.

Our Summer Film Academy lineup and dates will remain the same; however, we will be adjusting the breakdown of each day to keep students engaged both at home and online. This will be reflected on our summer workshop pages and further explained via email before each workshop begins.

Sincerely,

Light House Studio Staff
