What do I need in order to participate in an online workshop?

All you need is a computer (Mac, PC, ChromeBook) and an email address (many students use their paren’t email); we will provide the rest in the Filmmaking Kit. If you don’t have a computer, contact us. Some workshops will require specific editing software. We will provide downloadable information for these workshops before the workshop begins.

How will workshops be held online?

We will be using Zoom for group sessions and Google Classroom for smaller breakout groups and individual sessions. We will send out a Zoom link at the start of each workshop.

How do I pick up and return my Filmmaking Kit?

Equipment checkout locations may vary per week depending on the number of workshops taking place. Registered families will receive an email the week prior to their workshop notifying them of the pickup location.

Picking up: Drop by Light House Studio anytime from 3 – 5pm on the Sunday before your workshop begins to pick up your Filmmaking Kit. 

Returning: Drop off your Filmmaking Kit at Light House Studio anytime from 3 – 5pm on the Friday your workshop ends. 

*We will be thoroughly cleaning equipment in between usage. 

What will be in the Filmmaking Kit?

Items will slightly vary per workshop. Most kits will include a camera (these will vary depending on age level), tripod, 2 batteries + charger, and an SD Card. Middle school and high school workshops will include an external microphone. Find out more about the equipment here

What will a typical workshop day look like? 

It takes time to make a film! While the workshop schedule will vary slightly per day, students should expect to be engaged in and commit to their workshop from 9 – 3pm, M – F. An example of a typical day will include:

9:00 – 9:45am Group session

9:45 – 12:00pm Individual breakout sessions (to work on screenplay, storyboard, filming, etc.)* 

(12:00 – 12:30pm Lunch Break)

12:30 – 2:00pm One on one time with Teaching Artist (approx. 20 minutes)

2:00 – 3:00pm Group session

*Even though students may be working on their own or in groups (online), our TAs will be on call during this time to answer any questions a student may have. 

**The online time for children (810 years old) participating in MovieMakers workshops will be scaled back slightly and additional activities will be offered.

Will there be a screening of the final films?

Yes! We will be sending out a password protected link* the Monday after each workshop including all student films from that workshop so that you can watch with your friends and family. In addition, we will send a highlight film featuring the filmmakers.

*We keep all student films password protected for one year so that they are eligible to send to film festivals. We ask that you don’t publicly share your film outside of close friends and families until then.

When should I expect to hear details pertaining to my workshop?

We will be in touch with you the Wednesday before your workshop begins with a detailed schedule and any necessary notes from the Lead Teaching Artist. 

Is Financial Aid available?

Yes, there is a financial aid form at the bottom of the workshop registration form located on each individual workshop page. 

Can I still earn credits towards the Achievement Award?

Yes! On each workshop page, you will see a red, yellow, or blue ribbon indicating what type of workshop it is. Click here to find out more about the Achievement Award.

Can people who live out of state join?

Yes! This Spring we’ve had people join us from all over the country. If you are interested in this or know someone who is, please contact us directly. 

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that this is a challenging time for everyone. This spring, Light House Studio lost $95K in revenue due to postponements, cancellations and restructuring. The summer season is Light House Studio’s most important season as it allows us to connect with the most students and tuition contributes to 30% of our operating budget. We believe we are offering a unique opportunity for this year’s Summer Film Academy participants. 

At the same time, we understand the various reasons why some may want to pull out. Should you wish to cancel, please consider the following alternatives:

Option 1: Roll your paid tuition over to Summer 2021

Option 2: Consider donating all or some of your tuition to Light House Studio, 501(c)(3)

Revised Cancellation Policy:

Historically, and as noted on our website, Summer Film Academy cancellations made more than 30 days before the first day of the registered summer workshop received a 50% refund. In response to the unforeseen circumstances of the global health crisis and because you are important to us, we are offering a 75% refund this summer should you wish to cancel. Should you not wish to participate in the online Summer Film Academy, we would appreciate your giving serious consideration to Option 1 (rolling paid tuition over to Summer 2021) and Option 2 (converting part or all of your tuition into a donation). Cancellations made within 30 days of the start of the workshop are non-refundable. However, recognizing that those students enrolled in early June workshops are reading our new summer online plan within the 30-day window, we will honor a 75% refund through May 18th.
