exciting grant news

January 5, 2012

We are very thankful to have been the recipient of the following grants: Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band (CACF), Charlottesville Area Community Foundation Endowment Fund, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charlottesville, Inc. Below are the programs that these grants will help fund this year:

Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band (CACF).

This Fund supports charitable programs in the Charlottesville area with particular focus on disadvantaged youth, needs of the disabled, protection of the environment, and the arts and humanities. This grant will help support the purchase of new computers and software at Light House, scholarships for our Advanced Workshop, new special skills workshops (similar to last fall’s Cinematography and Directing), and the production of one show of What’s Going On C-ville.

Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF).

Funds from this grant will go towards the “Home Again” International Rescue Committee Documentary Workshop (offered this winter), our spring Keep It Reel programs in Westhaven and the Cherry Avenue Boys & Girls Club, as well as a new collaboration with the Shenandoah National Park Trust this spring (more details coming soon).

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charlottesville, Inc.

This gift will fund the Keep it Reel program in Southwood, as well as a new collaboration with the Big Brothers Big Sisters, a workshop in which Bigs and Littles will use the medium of film to learn more about each other and tell each other’s story.

In a grant awarded to us earlier last year, the Virginia Commission of the Arts had the following comments about Light House:

“Light House Studio has grown in a meaningful way. A point of pride in the community; the organization won the highest award for youth services in Charlottesville. Successfully addressing issues regarding youth from all backgrounds.  Doing commendable work in low income and public housing neighborhoods. Creating outstanding filmmakers…Focuses on a part of art that we do not see anywhere else….”

We are genuinely grateful for the support and recognition of these grants, which we believe signify that Light House is providing a needed service to the community. We are touched by the outpouring of support from the community, our corporate sponsors, as well as every individual who contributes time, money and effort to the mission of Light House.

Thank you!
